NAYRAH – Green hydrogen and green ammonia from Mauritania
Location: East of Nouadhibou, Mauritania
Status: In development / framework agreement signed
Technologies: solar, wind, BESS, electrolysis, ammonia synthesis, seawater desalination
End product: green hydrogen and green ammonia for export, especially to Europe
Project description
NAYRAH is Möhring Energie’s major project in Mauritania for the industrial production of green hydrogen and green ammonia. The project is part of a strategic partnership with the Mauritanian government and is part of the country’s national hydrogen strategy. The aim is to provide competitive green molecules for international customer markets based on excellent wind and solar resources and thus contribute to the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries.
Key data on the NAYRAH project
- Large-scale modular power-to-X project developed in Mauritania
- Start with a first fast-track module with an electrolysis capacity of around 100 MW
- Expansion to initially 1 GW electrolysis capacity, followed by further scaling
- Target production of up to 140,000 tons of green hydrogen per year
- Up to an additional 400,000 tons of green ammonia annually
- Planned start of production from 2029
- Secured project area of initially around 500 km², with potential for expansion to around 1,600 km² in the full expansion stage
- Integrated concept for seawater desalination for sustainable water supply
Special features
- Modular project approach: Nayrah is being developed in stages and can be flexibly adapted to market and infrastructure developments.
- Excellent site conditions: The area east of Nouadhibou offers exceptionally good wind and solar conditions for the economic production of renewable energy.
- Holistic sustainability concept: In addition to the production of green molecules, the project includes solutions for water- and soil-conserving development, including desalination and the potential use of regenerative by-products.
- Strategic international involvement: The project was launched as part of high-level political and economic cooperation between Mauritania, Germany and European partners.
Target markets & benefits
With NAYRAH, Möhring Energie is addressing the growing demand for green hydrogen and green ammonia in Europe in particular. The products are suitable as climate-friendly energy sources and raw materials for industries such as steel, chemicals, fertilizers and shipping. At the same time, the project strengthens the emerging energy partnership between Europe and Northwest Africa and supports the development of resilient, long-term supply chains for green molecules
Role of Möhring Energy
Möhring Energie is developing NAYRAH as a strategic international Power-to-X project together with state and local partners in Mauritania. The company is responsible for project development, from land and structural development to technical design and the preparation of investment, partner and offtake structures. With Nayrah, Möhring Energie is consistently expanding its international PtX pipeline alongside projects in Morocco and Brazil.
