NexTerra – Green hydrogen from Morocco for Europe’s future
Location: Tarfaya, South Morocco
Status: In development (preparation phase / FEED)
Technologies: solar, wind, BESS, electrolysis, ammonia synthesis, seawater desalination
End product: green ammonia / green hydrogen / eMethanol for export to the EU
Project description
NexTerra is one of the most ambitious Power-to-X projects in North Africa – developed by Möhring Energie in strategic partnership with local players in Morocco. The aim is to produce large quantities of green hydrogen and green derivatives for export to energy-intensive EU markets – as a contribution to industrial decarbonization.
Key data (planning status)
- ±~ 20 GW installed capacity from solar and wind energy
- Multi-stage modular electrolysis system for green hydrogen with a final capacity of 10 GW
- Seawater desalination for H₂ production –100% regeneratively powered
- Ammonia & methanol synthesis for the production of transportable energy sources
- Modular expandable storage solutions (BESS) for grid stabilization
- Export infrastructure: location close to the port for ship connections
Special features
- Holistic system approach: production, storage, conversion and export in an integrated project approach
- Locally anchored – internationally networked: close cooperation with national authorities, communities and industry partners
- Scalability: Design as a scalable blueprint for further PtX hubs in North Africa
Target markets & benefits
- Green hydrogen & ammonia to replace fossil fuels in industries such as steel, chemicals and shipping
- Energy partnership with Europe: contributing to security of supply and meeting European climate targets
- Long-term PPA and offtake structures in preparation
Role of Möhring Energy
Möhring Energie is responsible for the entire project development at NexTerra – from site development, approval processes and technical design to investor and partner structuring. Implementation is carried out with local expertise via the subsidiary Möhring Energie Maroc.
